*These characters will only be available to people who pre-order the game, and they do not take up a spot on the regular roster of characters.

Synopsis:
The story is based mostly upon Marvel's Civil War story arc with bits of the Secret War arc as well. It will be handled as a "What If?" scenario.
Much like in the actual comic event, you will come to a point where you must choose which side you're on; Security or Freedom. Only 4 of the playable characters are locked into sides; Iron Man and Mr. Fantastic are on the Pro-Registration/Security side, and Captain America and Luke Cage are on the Anti-Registration/Freedom side. Everyone else can be recruited to the side that you choose to play through the game as.

Clearly, there will be at least two distinct endings depending on which side you choose, as well as altered version of those endings depending on what you do throughout the course of the game, much like the first game.

Gameplay Additions:
--The game has seemingly been redone from the ground up and will be using the Havok physics engine. The gameplay itself is basically a revamped version of the way it was before.
--The environment is a lot more interactive (read: destructive).
--Fusions! This time around, two heroes' attacks can be "fused" together to create unique and powerful attacks. According to Game Informer, fusions are done by pressing a designated button, and then selecting which ally to perform the fusion with. In multiplayer, two players must press the button simultaneously.
--Three distinct types of fusions: Clearing, Guided, and Targeted. Targeted fusions are designed for massive damage against single enemies, such as bosses, guided fusions are fusions that can be directly controlled while they are active (such as being able to move around a giant fire-tornado that Human Torch and Storm create), and Clearing I'm assuming are fusions designed for hitting multiple enemies in a wide radius.
--What you choose to say during dialogue sequences can actually change the way missions progress based on what option you chose, whether it be aggressive, defensive, diplomatic, and so on.
--Instead of having preset team and costume bonuses or even items, you can earn stat/skills/etc. boosts, and apply theses boosts to your team. This makes it so that your team will always have the applied bonus on them, no matter who you chose to have on it. A maximum of three boosts can be active at one time.
--Characters can be swapped on the fly, however those characters will have the same amount of health as the character that was swapped out in order to avoid any exploitation of this new feature by switching out your heroes whenever they get hurt.
--According to Game Informer, combat and destruction will earn you ability orbs which can be spent on upgrading passive powers.
--DLC! Characters have been promised to be available as DLC.
--Rather than having a bunch of moves, each character with have 4 combat powers, and a number of passive abilities.
